About the Transgender Youth Awareness Program:
According to GLSEN’s 2005 National Climate Survey, 73.2% of transgender youth felt unsafe at school because of their gender expression.
Simply put: this is unacceptable.
The Transgender Youth Awareness Program is one of the first initiatives nationwide seeking to address this startling statistic by promoting the delivery of culturally competent services and providing training and resources to educators and those that work with youth. We seek to reduce the incidence of bullying and harassment based on gender identity and expression by providing the tools, knowledge and experience educators and those working with transgender youth need to foster a safer school climate.
About the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network Washington State:
GLSEN Washington State seeks to end school-based violence and harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. According to statistics, harassment and violence continue to be the rule, not the exception in Kindergarten through 12th grade.
We accomplish our goals by combating harassment and discrimination, creating learning environments that affirm the inherent dignity of all students and staff, and by uniting students, educators, families and communities.
